Travels in the Ohio Country and America's 250th Anniversary

This piece is an in-depth historical account of the importance of two sites– Fort Laurens and Schoenbrunn Village– in the context of the Revolutionary War period of the United States. I report on the complexities of the relationships among Indigenous groups, Moravian missionaries, revolutionary war soldiers, and British loyalists leading up to and during the Revolutionary War as it was experienced in the Ohio Country using the sites of Schoenbrunn Village (the first European settlement in the Ohio Country) and Fort Laurens (the westernmost U.S. fort in the Revolutionary War).

I bring the soul of a wanderer and the lens of a social scientist to my writing. My academic background in political communication, the development of the U.S. and its origins in settler colonialism, and a grounding in solid quantitative and qualitative evidence shape how I understand the world. I’m a university professor, traveler, and writer based in Boulder, Colorado, building a portfolio of thoughtful, place‑rooted travel essays. My favorite destinations include the Hawaiian Islands, U.S. national parks, and any place in the world with a deep and interesting history and/or great snorkeling.
